The evolutionary history of Eucalyptus and its relatives has been poorly documented from the fossil record. In the past, a few researchers have claimed to identify Eucalyptus fossils from South America, but those records failed to hold up to modern scientific examination.

The Eucalyptus fossils upon which this discovery is based are around 52 million years old, putting them in the early Eocene Epoch (56- 33.9 MYA). The fossils include leaves and reproductive material that are similar to Eucalyptus, although in some cases also similar to the closely related genus Corymbia.

2011-06-28 · Herein, we introduce fossil material of Eucalyptus from the early Eocene (ca. 51.9 Ma) Laguna del Hunco paleoflora of Chubut Province, Argentina; specimens include multiple leaves, infructescences, and dispersed capsules, several flower buds, and a single flower. The researchers erected the new species Eucalyptus xoshemium for the whole fossil flower. The donated pollen found within the flower comes from the fossil species Myrtaceidites eucalyptoides . Previously, M. eucalyptoides was known only from dispersed pollen, which prevented palynologists from assessing intraspecific variability in the pollen grains and affected confidence in its phylogenetic placement. Joaquín Frenguelli (1883-1958) was the first to describe a fossil Eucalyptus from Patagonia.

World's fossil fuel resources such as crude oil, natural gas and coal are decreasing at alarming rate due to the increasing demand for fossil fuels across the globe.

It presents taxonomic, distributional, and ecological data about the entire fossil record. Evidence for this has been found in the fossil record, and includes fossilised conifer cones that ‘intentionally’ catch fire to release their seeds (Figure 2d, e). One of the most iconic fire-adapted plants today is Eucalyptus, native to Australasia (see Figure 2b for an example of fossil Eucalyptus). CiteSeerX - Document Details (Isaac Councill, Lee Giles, Pradeep Teregowda): A brief summary of the systematic placement of Tasmanian species of the genus Eucalyptus is provided.
